I won't explain anything, which would turn out to be another evidence to your "sore point" claim. I just suggest you should not be so self-assumed. I know you have heard something about China, which we all understand well, but there are lots of aspect you know nothing about. Then, I can't figure out how can you make a judgement with such a limited understanding. I am not mad at you at all, and I didn't mean to offend you if there is something unpolite. And I am completely aware that you may find thousands of opinions on your side in the west.
Confidence is good thing, but blindless is usually taken as the impetus of confidence.
By the way, Live World Cup is already on China's TV now.
Thanks for your reply, but I'd really like to know more. Having read books like Wild Swans and seen the constant barrage of news articles we get here about how the Chinese Government suppresses and controls the media (e.g. the censorship of google.cn) and seeing the ongoing protest by the Falun Gong people outside the Chinese Embassy round the corner from where I live, for example, I think my opinion is probably quite predictable.
What is interesting to me is that avotius and yourself seem to indicate that the reality is very different. I understand if you do not want to qualify or explain your objection to my clearly flippant comment, but if you could give me some idea of where to look to get a less one-sided dimension I would be most appreciative.
I have never had cause to think that my perception would be incorrect, so I apologise for sounding self-assured. However, if the only responses I'm offered to my semi-serious point, are simply claims of my ignorance with no qualification then I can only assume that these are stock or mandatory answers to this sort of criticism and cause my westernised mind to assume some level of indoctrination.
Don't be ridiculous. You'd better refer Tian'anmen Incident as your example, rather than the most absurd Falun Gong. Do you really get touch with a member of that group in China? Do you know how they "treat" their family members to get the so-called release from the claimed god? And can you imagine that there is a tiny possibility the groups named "Falun Gong" can be different, some of which are utilized as a political dummy, while the others are turned out to be the innocent mass protesting outside the embassy and accidentally happened to you.
Even famed media like BBC and Reuters are not objective about the whole story, so I completely understand your rage about the government's surpress, which shows you are a conscious human right defender.
And may you rethink those dire stories in a retrospective way? Supposed that all those stories were 100 percent true and had no other explaination at all, how can the 1.3 billion "enslaved" chinese people endure that evil government? Are they all nuts only to be saved by Falun Gong?
To understand China, you should know the complexity of China who has a continuous history and culture which extends at least three thousand years.
When it comes to the censorship of internet, I can tell you lots of chinese google users including me are angry with that policy. It's too difficult to convince you that the policy is issued to filter those rumors in order to fight against the powerful westen media like AP, who claims that Falun Gong should be protected and legalized.
And now you may get a modest understanding that your kind human rights protection makes the whole situation more complicated. I can predict the more you know about China, the more angry you may be, but you will never know the stories behind your daily AP stories until you use your mind to examine the whole thing and compare the fully opposite images you get from either side of the world.
As a student of News and Communication, I wanna remind both of us, we are individuals, not slaves of powerful media, although I am a fan of BBC and Reuters myself.
Ok that's more like iike it - some explanation. It seems we do actually share some similar views then, for example regarding the censorship of the internet. It's not too difficult to convince me, as you put it, of what is plausible and true when it is explained to me in a reasoned and credible manner. I have had no contact with Falun Gong people whatsoever, I merely cited them as an example that is visible to me of an element of Chinese society who have a longstanding grievance with the Chinese Government, which may influence my understanding. The Chinese people I know have nothing to do with them.
Thank you for your reply as it has given me a hint of another perspective which is obviously a good thing, as more communication between people of different countries can only be. As for your point about people enduring evil governments I'm not sure I can readily agree with your thinking that that would be an incredible situation. There are many examples through history of societies accepting, for a time at least, incredibly "misguided" governments for one reason or another. Hitler's Germany, Pol Pot's Cambodia, China's Cultural Revolution, Suharto's Indonesia, the Burmese junta and many would say Bush and Blair's US and UK respectively, to name but a few.
Anyway thanks again for your responses and I apologise if I have caused any offence with my first comment. I'll be keeping an eye on your gallery, as I will with avotius' - fresh and, of course, uncensored images from within China are not only hard to come by here but are of great interest to me.
You are welcome. Next time you come to China, I would like to show you around about what China is, if you like to feel this old oriental country with your heart and mind instead of those cliche and bullshit of media(but you may say that's what China is through my eyes, haha). I wonder how does the longstanding greivance thought come to you. In fact, we only have those popular naive tales, which depicted malicious lordowners and cruel magistrates, handed down from one generation to another as Grimms Fairytales. This is also common in other countries all over the world and can't be a steady proof to your greivance thought. But I didn't say there was not any greivance in history and nowadays(it takes too much time to explain it). And I'd like to make this clear instead. As there isn't a pure cultural and social revolution, just like the renaissance which waken the individual to fight against the evil and injustive. The opposite, namely numbness, is more pervasive during ordinary citizens, and slashed harshly by lots of conscious chinese eminent writer, such as LuXun. So the westen world don't believe chinese can obtain what you gain in renaissance through communist revolution, not to mention communism is perceived as heresy by someone against Hobsbown. As a result, those human violation charges are raised before the whole thing was clear to the critic himself.
You mentioned Cultural Revolution, during which thousands of families were crashed. But I have to say it's an excessive correction to adverse chinese tradition, whose advocate is set as Confucius. Secondly, it's a burst of the enlightenment since May Fourth Movement 1919, who is thought to bring in "Mr. Demorcarcy" and "Mr. Science" to China. Now you may understand why we have a crazy population, who were sane and timid before before and after the "notorious" decade. In conclusion, this revolution is not simply a political movement.
Now, I feel quite right to recommend you to learn the outline of the whole chinese history before making any judgement. Look, to explain this, I cited too much chinese history. Ray Huang(Huang Renyu)'s works enlightens me a lot.
